The Wonderful Word

“These words aren’t like what our Muslim leaders teach us,” said Reema, a widowed mother of five. We were sitting in her living room and talking about Jesus’ command to love our enemies.

For several weeks, Reema and I have been discussing Scripture when we visit each other. She is hungry for the truth and God is opening her heart to His Word.

These conversations started when she invited me over and we started talking about death. I told her that I’m not afraid to die because I know I’m going to heaven.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.  — John 3:16

I told her, “Ever since I decided to follow Jesus, I know I’m never alone because God is always close to me.”

Reema nodded. She described how difficult life had been since her husband died. “Then I started reading some wonderful things on Facebook each night after putting the children to bed,” she said. “Those words made me feel closer to God. Let me show them to you.”

She flipped through her Facebook feed on her phone. “This says, ‘Do good to those who are unkind.’” It was a paraphrase of Luke 6:27. Then she showed me another image with more Scripture on it:

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.  — Romans 8:28

“Isn’t that wonderful!?” Reema asked.

“Do you know this is from the Bible?” I asked her. “Would you like to read more?”

“Yes, but where can I find it?” she asked.

I helped her find a Bible app, and she was really happy to discover that she could hear it in her own language. We listened to a passage together. Then she asked, “Can you tell me about the religion of Jesus’ family?”

I shared about some of the Old Testament prophesies that foretold Christ’s coming. Then I suggested we start reading together more regularly on our visits, and she eagerly agreed.

I marvel at how God is using Facebook to introduce people like Reema to the Gospel. She is so hungry for the Word. Please join us in praying that her heart would continue opening to the truth and that she would discover Jesus Christ as her Savior.
