I sipped chai in my living room as Sabra shared her desire to become my family’s house helper. In our host village, we were expected to hire a local and eager to build relationships with our Muslim neighbors. My husband and I liked Sabra right away, but there was still an important question left to ask.
Setting my cup aside, I lifted a silent prayer, then plunged ahead. “We’re followers of Jesus. Are you comfortable with that?”
I knew from the local friend who’d referred Sabra that she’d once welcomed prayer in Jesus’ name. That didn’t necessarily mean she wanted to work for a Christian.
To my relief, Sabra nodded without hesitation. “I like Jesus. I had a dream about Him recently.”
“Really?” Anxious to hear more, I leaned forward. “Will you share it with me?”
“Of course.” Sabra told me about finding Jesus in a chair at the foot of her bed in her dream. “He told me not to worry and that He would send help for us. He also said He would bring my husband back soon.”
Despite the tears rimming her eyes, she continued. “My husband was in a terrible accident last year and suffered a brain injury. Now, he lives with his parents so they can care for him. My daughter and I had to move in with my parents. But Jesus said He would reunite us.”
I smiled. “If Jesus said it, then it must be true. I believe it.”
We spoke a few minutes longer, but it was clear the Lord had led Sabra to my family. I had no doubts about offering her the job.
Within weeks, she had blessed us in numerous ways, occasionally bringing her daughter Raihana to play with my kids and even inviting her mother to help cook an extra-special recipe. She also welcomed us into her house, where we met her father and celebrated Raihana’s birthday.
We quickly formed a strong bond with the whole family, so when Raihana fell seriously ill, we did whatever we could.
One morning, I joined Sabra in my kitchen. Her eyes were rimmed with red, and I could tell she’d been crying. Wrapping her in a hug, I said, “You shouldn’t be here. Go home and take care of your daughter.”
She shook her head. “I can’t. She needs to go to the hospital, but we can’t afford it. I have to work.”
“No, you don’t.” After gathering a few more details, I offered to pay her in advance for the next several weeks.
Sabra sighed in relief. “Thank you. You don’t know what this means to my family.”
Before she left that day, we prayed in Jesus’ name for her daughter’s healing. My family and I continued praying, but every update we received was the same. Despite the medications and use of oxygen, Raihana struggled to breathe. She had no energy and slept almost nonstop.
Things weren’t looking good.
Eventually, my husband and I headed to the hospital, hoping to pray for Raihana in person. When we arrived, I was surprised at the number of visitors packed into the room. Many of them I’d never met.
Our presence felt like an intrusion, but Sabra welcomed us with open arms and eagerly introduced us to everyone. Finally, the opportunity came to pray.
I approached Raihana, asleep in the bed. “May I touch her?” I asked.
Sabra nodded, her expression desperate. “Please, do whatever you can.”
Resting a palm across Raihana’s sweaty forehead, I rebuked her sickness and asked the Lord for healing in Jesus’ name. With his hand on my shoulder, my husband followed my prayer, calling on the power of God to rescue the little girl.
Immediately after we finished, Raihana’s eyes opened and she reached for her mother. Though still weak, she was now alert and full of smiles.
Jesus had intervened! Over the next week, Raihana continued to improve, and she returned home to fully recover.
We’re eager to hear how God will make His name known through Raihana’s healing. Though we don’t know what He has planned for this family, we pray regularly for all of them, including Sabra’s husband. We are asking for his miraculous healing, and that God will one day receive glory throughout our village because of His power and might.
There is no greater dream than that!
Pray:
- Ask God to restore Sabra’s husband and reunite their family for His glory!
- Pray that Muslims who witness healings and other miracles will seek the truth about Jesus and discover the power of His name.
- Praise the Lord for revealing Himself to the Muslim world through dreams and visions.
