A sixteen-hour car ride from our city lives a family unlike any other I’ve ever met in this country.
The Nasri’s are a family of Muslim-background believers. They love the Lord and care for one another as a church body. For several years, they’ve been discipled by fellow field workers who live nearby. Family members gather often to discuss God’s Word, worship together, and listen to the Lord in prayer.
Recently, the workers encouraging them asked us to come spend a weekend training the Nasri family in how to make disciples. As Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:19,
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Equipping local believers to advance God’s Kingdom is an important part of our ministry to reach Muslims in our host country. We’ve discovered that training and coaching helps our national brothers and sisters become even more effective as disciple makers.
After driving sixteen hours across the arid countryside, we were greeted warmly by this family of faithful believers.
Our weekend started with several hours of prayer and worship. Then we dove into God’s Word. We studied principles that lead toward new movements of faith in Christ. Some of these include personal engagement with Scripture, joyful obedience to God’s commands, and inviting others to discover Jesus in the Word.
We talked about God’s desire that many generations of disciples would make disciples who make more disciples. We discussed how to bring the Gospel into families and social groups. In Luke 10, we read about looking for people who create opportunities for the Gospel to enter their communities. Finally, we shared how movements of faith transform whole societies when people study the Bible, meet as churches, and become followers of Jesus.
At the end of the weekend, we prayed for one another, asking God to help each of us put into practice everything we had learned.
In the weeks since then, the Lord has already used members of the Nasri family in mighty ways. They are sharing with five other families, starting Bible study groups, and baptizing new believers!
Pray that this family’s faith would multiply through many generations as they make disciples and welcome more families into the Kingdom!
