Continued from part 1: From the Other Side: Living Among Syrian Refugees.
My family and I had lived in Syria for several years. In 2011, before the violence began in Syria, God providentially led us to relocate to a neighboring country.
Then Arab Spring started and swept through the Middle East. When the Syrian revolution began, we were not surprise. During our years in Syria, our local friends had told us, one after another, how much they disliked their dictatorial government.
As the civil war progressed, floods of refugees crossed the border into our host country. Suddenly we had so many more opportunities to tell our beloved Syrians about Jesus and to demonstrate His love. God had directed us to a place where we could minister to Syrians like never before.
Now we spend as much time as we can with refugees. We have come to love sitting with them on the floor and drinking tea with them, hearing how they’re doing, and opening Scripture to share the Gospel with them.
Oftentimes during our visits, someone will ask, “When are you going to share a story?” We share from a set of chronological Bible stories and these have been warmly received. Syrians are searching for hope, and in the midst of it, we find that we have new and unparalleled freedom to share the Gospel.
We are amazed at how readily Syrians are entering the Kingdom of God.
One time, I was visiting refugees with a fellow worker named Phil. Phil had recently led a Syrian family to the Lord. We sat down with the family, chatted, and drank tea. As Phil opened his Bible to share, a neighbor lady knocked twice on the open door and then walked in. Phil looked at the host and asked, “Should I continue?”
“Yes, go ahead,” the host responded.
After teaching this Syrian family of new believers about being new creatures in Christ, Phil turned to the neighbor and asked, “Would you like to follow Jesus, too?”
“Yes,” she said, just like that. We prayed with her as she affirmed her desire to follow Jesus.
This woman’s story is no longer unusual. Her experience is being repeated among Syrians all around the country, which now hosts hundreds of thousands refugees. They are in great need of physical assistance, and by God’s grace through faithful supporters, we are helping meet their needs
But more important is their need for a Savior, and in larger numbers than ever before, Syrians are finding and turning to Jesus.
