God used unexpected circumstances to bring our friend Fatima into the Kingdom and fill her with boldness to share the Gospel.
Our team had been several believing men we were discipling in our city, a place surrounded by smooth, green hills. But we’d seen only one Muslim background woman come to believe in Jesus. We knew that a movement of faith in Christ wouldn’t grow until more women started following Him. In many Muslim communities, women are the gatekeepers of religion for their families, and mothers play influential roles in shaping the faith of their children. For the Gospel to take root and spread, women need to embrace and help nurture it.
One of the Muslim women we were praying for was Fatima. She was married to Saleh, a new follower of Jesus we were helping disciple. He shared the Good News with his wife, explaining why he had chosen to obey and serve Christ. But Fatima adamantly rejected the message and even started rejecting Saleh.
While visiting America, my wife and I visited a prayer-focused small group. We asked them to pray that Muslim women—especially Fatima and the wives of other believing men—would embrace Jesus Christ as Savior.
A couple days after praying with this small group, we received word that Saleh had been murdered for his faith. We were devastated.
Then, the night after Saleh’s death, Fatima had a dream. She saw her husband standing next to Jesus in heaven. “Come and join me here,” Saleh urged her. “Follow Jesus with me.”
Fatima woke up convinced that the dream was from God. She immediately decided to follow Christ.
That day, she visited Nejma, the only woman in the fellowship of Muslim-background believers within their community. Fatima told her about the dream, and the two women agreed to start meeting regularly for prayer, Bible study, and discipleship. In the following months, Fatima’s faith exploded with boldness and passion. She began sharing the Gospel with anyone who would listen and led many others to faith.
But a few months later, Fatima was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
