When I am Weak

When-I-am-Weak

My family has lived in our host country a year and a half now. Some days, we’ve felt down and discouraged—and not just because of the large rat that recently took residence in our kitchen. (Our son keeps referring to it as the rabbit.)

I’m slowly plodding along in language learning. My husband Christopher’s level of language is a bit more sophisticated than mine. Regardless, we feel desperate to communicate the spiritual things on our hearts. But that still seems so far off.

As we face our linguistic weaknesses, the task before us just feels really big. We’re attempting to reach a people group of ten million Muslims—and we see only a handful of workers reaching them.

If they are to be reached within our day, it will require a supernatural work of God. Leading one person at a time along the road to the Kingdom isn’t enough. We are praying for a people movement that brings a multitude praising Jesus Christ.

In spite of our great limitations, we do share about Jesus. May God show His glory through our weaknesses and blunderings.

For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:10)

Our language teacher invited us over for Eid al-Adha, the Islamic holiday that celebrates God’s provision of a ram as a substitute sacrifice for Abraham’s son. With broken sentences and faulty grammar, we explained to our helper how followers of Christ celebrate God’s provision of Jesus as a substitute in place of our death.

Recently, Christopher visited Habib, a friend with whom he’s shared about Jesus. Over a spread of wonderful Arab dishes, Habib talked about how so many Muslims try to live purer lives as they get older, in anticipation of their approaching judgment. Christopher explained how only Jesus can remove our imperfections to meet God’s standards.

We thank God that He is committed to revealing Himself to the multitudes that have yet to enter His Kingdom.

And we are grateful that He uses us—in spite of our weaknesses—to point them toward Jesus.
