How I Met My Language Helper

Finding a language helper was much harder than Kathryn had expected. For months, she’d been searching and praying. She had even printed fliers advertising her need and had plastered them around the neighborhood and distributed them to local shops.

Still, she had no leads.

“Lord, what else do I do?” Kathryn prayed, slumping into a chair at the kitchen table. She knew that her current language skills were enough to get by. But she wanted to be able to speak about matters of the heart and to share the Gospel. To do that, she needed to go deeper into the language.

Her eyes settled on the small pile of fliers stacked on the counter. Was it a lost cause?

It couldn’t be, she decided. She had to learn the local language somehow. So, she threw on a headscarf and grabbed a handful of fliers to canvas the neighborhood one more time.

As she stepped out her door, Kathryn prayed, “God, let me meet my language helper today!”

She hadn’t got far when a man on a scooter stopped next to her as she taped a flier to a light pole.

He read it and said, “My sister could help you. Come visit us now. We’re just down the street,” he said pointing at a house with colorful trim.

Moments later, the man’s mother and sister were settling Kathryn down in their small living room and serving her tea. Meanwhile, she explained to them that she was looking for a woman to help her learn to speak their language and understand their culture.

Aisha’s eyes glowed with eagerness. “Let me be your language helper!” she said.

The next day, Aisha came over for their first lesson. Kathryn started by asking Aisha to tell her about herself. Aisha shared openly about her life and her struggles.

“I haven’t shared these things with anyone before,” Aisha confessed. “As soon as I came into your home, I could tell it was different. Why do I feel comfortable telling you things I haven’t told anyone else?”

“My family and I love and follow Jesus Christ,” Kathryn explained, “and He lives here in this home with us.”

“Ah!” Aisha responded, her eyes aglow. “That’s the difference, and I want to know more.”

Pray for Aisha to be drawn to Jesus and to welcome Him into her home.
