One Month for Courage

It was a huge undertaking, hosting eight Muslim-background believers in our home for a month.

They came from a neighboring country where there’s a growing movement of faith happening among Muslims—a movement we helped start years earlier before our visas were canceled by government authorities.

When asked if we could help train new believers to make disciples, we readily agreed and welcomed the eight men and women to stay with us for a month.

Every day, we met for six hours of prayer, teaching, and discussion. The trainees learned to lead Bible studies, make disciples, and help start movements to Christ.

In the afternoons, the trainees went out to put into practice the skills they were learning. They looked for persons of peace—people who open doors for the Gospel to enter homes and communities—and invited men and women to study the Word. They prayed for people in the name of Jesus and shared about the Kingdom of God.

One highlight of the month was an overnight trip to a refugee camp several hours away. As soon as they arrived in the refugee camp, they met a man of peace who invited them to stay the night in his tent. But our friends didn’t sleep a wink. All night long, men and women in the camp came to hear them talk about Jesus. They shared the Gospel with Islamic leaders and a king of a tribe, and they ran out of Bibles to hand out. By the time our trainees left the next day, four people had decided to follow Christ.

The month of training was exhausting. Hosting eight guests in our home for several weeks and speaking constantly in a second language stretched us.

But equipping these eager brothers and sisters with new skills, confidence, and courage to become effective disciple-makers was worth it.

“At first, I didn’t know how to talk about Jesus,” one trainee said at the end of the month. “I was afraid to do it. Now it’s easy and normal. I am so excited to go home and talk to my Muslim neighbors about Jesus.”

Another man shared, “Now I understand what the Bible says about discipleship and multiplication. I have a vision for how it might look for the church to grow in my context.”

The trainees returned home emboldened to reach Muslims and make disciples. They each identified a specific Muslim village or community where they will focus on expanding the Kingdom.

“I discovered that I really enjoy sharing the Gospel,” one woman shared. “And I now have the courage and confidence to do it.”

  • Pray that our trainees will continue studying God’s Word, sharing the Good News, and reaching out to Muslims.
  • Ask God to prepare communities for movements of faith that impact entire tribes and peoples throughout the region.
  • Pray that Muslims who hear the Gospel will be drawn into the Kingdom and follow Jesus Christ.
