Are You Not of More Value?

The pigeon limped on its one good foot and struggled to eat a hard pizza crust from the street.

I’m not in the habit of helping lame and hungry pigeons. But as my teammate Rick and I were out prayer walking, I stopped, broke up the crust, and began feeding the bird.

Just then, an older Muslim man in traditional dress limped past us. He chuckled at my efforts.

Suddenly he stopped and turned to face us. “God is going to reward you for that,” he declared in a hushed, heartfelt voice.

The old man, named Samir, went on to explain that God cares deeply for all things. “It’s rare to see someone honoring God’s creation,” Samir said.

In the moments that followed, we had a beautiful conversation. I shared how the Lord provides for the birds of the air—but even more so, He provides for His people.

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? (Matthew 6:26)

Tears welled up in Samir’s eyes and he told us about his injured knee. Just now he was headed to the hospital for a checkup to prepare for knee surgery.

Rick explained how Jesus Christ healed people while on earth. “We can pray for that same healing for you, right now, in His name,” we offered Samir.

He welcomed our prayers. When we finished, Samir’s eyes grew wide. The old man started skipping and hopping about, telling us how his knee felt healed.

How exciting it is to witness our heavenly Father’s love for Muslims!

  • Praise God for how Samir’s compassion toward creation led to an opportunity for healing!
  • Pray that Christ’s healing would soften Muslims’ hearts to hear the Gospel and to accept the Savior.
  • Ask the Lord to give field workers more opportunities to connect meaningfully with Muslim men and women.
