To Be Clean Enough

Kamila splashes her face with water and mutters to herself, “I must be clean enough.“

Sitting on a low stool, she washes her right foot and places it on a white cloth laid on the ground next to her. She repeats with the left foot, then grabs hold of one end of the cloth and shuffles into her bedroom. This is how she keeps her feet from touching the dirty floor.

With a white scarf over her head, she steps onto a prayer mat and bows to the floor as she recites her morning prayers.

Kamila goes about her day doing her best to be a good wife and mother. She teaches her children about Islam and reminds them to pray five times a day. She works hard to provide a home-cooked meal for her husband and children.

At the end of the day, once the whole family is asleep, Kamila washes again. She prays, then sits on the floor reading the Qur’an. It’s in classical Arabic, a language she doesn’t understand. But she’s been told that the Qur’an can’t be read in any other language. It only counts if she reads it in Arabic.

Kamila puts the book away and crawls into bed, but she’s afraid to go to sleep. What if she dies and finds herself on the wrong side of heaven? She’s heard that if her good works outweigh her bad deeds, then she might get to heaven. But there’s no assurance. According to Islam, she can never be sure—not until death has its final word.

But death hasn’t had its final word. A friend has told Kamila about assurance through Jesus Christ. And she’s curious.

Kamila tries to spend as much time as she can with her friend Wendy, a Frontiers worker. “Tell me more about Jesus,” she says to Wendy. “Can you share more of His teachings with me?”

After seeing how carefully Kamila washes before prayer, Wendy tells her, “Christ has already made a way for you to be clean. He cleans us not just on the outside, but on the inside, too. Jesus is the one who can give you a clean heart that makes you right before God.”

  • Pray for Kamila to understand and believe that Christ alone can make her perfectly clean.
  • Pray that she would embrace Christ and find peace and security in His promise of eternal salvation.
  • Ask the Lord to stir hunger for true righteousness and cleanliness in the hearts of Muslim men and women.
