“I need to tell you what I’ve discovered about Islam,” my friend Yunas said to me. We were sitting in the far corner of a café, where we had met often over the years to talk about work, family, and faith.
“It’s all a lie,” Yunas explained. For over an hour, he shared his recent revelation that the foundation of his entire life had been built on sand. His religion offered him no peace and no hope for eternal salvation.
He pointed to the booth where we had sat most often. “We’d be right there, and whenever you shared with me the words of Jesus, I knew that they were true. And now I want to know, what do I do to really know the truth?”
Yunas had heard so much of the Gospel before. And now his heart was ready to receive it. I reminded him of God’s story from creation to Jesus’ resurrection. Then I explained that Jesus had already made a way for him to know God’s peace. He only needed to believe Christ’s message and follow Him.
In the weeks that followed, Yunas studied as much of the Word as he could. He was building a new foundation on the firm truth of Jesus Christ. It wasn’t long before he professed his new faith in Christ and said he wanted to be baptized.
Last week, Yunas invited me to meet his family for the first time. When I arrived, Yunas whispered to me, “You cannot tell my wife about my faith in Jesus!” His wife Hana belongs to a conservative family, and he wasn’t sure he was ready for her to know that he had become a follower of Jesus.
“It’s your story to share,” I replied. “But the story of what God has done in my life is mine to share.” He heartily agreed and encouraged me to share it.
At one point I turned to Hana and said, “You have beautiful children!”
She nodded in agreement.
“God gave us children as precious gifts,” I continued, “But they were not ours. They are His.” I shared how it’s our responsibility as parents to teach them to love, know, and fear God. “Our job is to help our kids realize that the Lord is holy, that we are not, and that that we need a Savior,” I said.
What followed was a wonderful discussion about creation, the fall, and God’s promise to send a Savior. “Jesus Christ is the perfect sacrifice that God promised,” I said as Hana listened intently.
Before I left, I asked if I could pray for Yunas, Hana, and their children. Hana agreed, and we all held out our hands as I asked God to provide for them, reveal Himself, and show them the truth. Hana wiped tears from her face as we finished.
That evening, Yunas called. His wife wanted to ask me a question. “Do you have a Bible I could read?” she asked as Yunas handed her the phone.
I brought her a Bible several days later when I came to visit Yunas. Hana gratefully took the Bible, saying, “I haven’t been able to sleep since hearing everything you shared on your last visit.”
“Start in the Gospels,” I suggested. “And ask God to show you the truth. He will do it!”
- Pray that Yunas’ entire family will put their faith in Jesus Christ and build their lives on Him.
- Ask the Lord to continue drawing Hana to Himself, and pray that she will share the Gospel with her extended family.
- Ask God to give Frontiers’ workers abundant opportunities to introduce Muslims to Christ, the founder and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:1).
