Zeinah hasn’t seen her mother since she and her husband fled Syria over five years ago. She wanted to take her with them when they left the country, but she was in poor health, and Zeinah was afraid she wouldn’t make it.
Zeinah speaks with her mother by phone almost weekly. But she worries that the fighting is getting closer to her mother’s home. Zeinah has already lost a cousin, two brothers, and two nephews in the war. Will her mother be safe when violence returns and lands on her doorstep?
For four years, war has been raging in Aleppo, a key battleground that was once Syria’s largest city. After weeks of bombardment and food shortages, a ceasefire has finally been brokered, providing an opportunity for the evacuation of thousands of Syrian men, women, and children.
And yet, true peace remains distant for people like Zeinah’s mother.
As we see the events unfolding in Syria, it’s difficult to make sense of the grief and trauma endured by millions of Syrian families.
But with hearts rooted in the hope of Jesus Christ, we can look at what is and find hope in what is not yet.
With Aleppo and its people in turmoil, let’s cry out to God for mercy—believing in the hope that is coming.
Pray with us:
- Ask God to protect those who are evacuating the city. Pray for the safe passage of thousands of men, women, and children.
- Pray for God’s mercy to hold off the onset of cold weather, providing more time for families to find shelter.
- Ask the Lord to give compassion, wisdom, and courage to those working to alleviate the suffering of Syrians.
- Pray that in these days, the Kingdom of God would draw near to Syrian families in their suffering and that many would turn to the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation.
